While Matt and Trevor Gile and their father, Chuck, may have gone into the auto repair business three years ago with Cleveland Heights-based Motorcars Collision, the family has dreamt about donuts for at least seven years.
This Friday, January 26, the trio will realize their dream with the opening of Daylight Donuts and Coffee (3077 Mayfield Road in Cleveland Heights) along with their newly-relocated Motorcars Collision.
“It’s hard to have someone upset or not smiling when you hand them a donut,” says Matt Gile. “It just seemed like a fun business.”
According to Matt, both companies are located in a former Pontiac dealership, and Daylight will have drive-thru service as well as walk-in service. The donut shop will take up about 1,700 square feet of the building, while the collision center will occupy the remaining 10,000 square feet.
While Daylight Donuts is a chain, the Giles’ franchise is the first in Northeast Ohio. The partners are also putting a consciously local influence on much of what they are doing. “Six Shooter Coffee is locally roasting all of our coffee for us, and we’re getting soup from SouperMarket,” explains Matt. “We’re getting everything local from Produce Packaging Inc (PPI). We’re just trying to keep it in the community.”
A team of bakers will arrive at the shop each morning to make 15 to 20 varieties of donuts from scratch, as well as donut holes, cinnamon rolls, and other sweet confections. Matt says all flavors are delicious, but he’s partial to the glazed and sour cream donuts. “They’re light and airy,” he says of the glazed. “They’re amazing.”
Once Daylight Donuts is up and running, Matt says they will start experimenting with new flavors and offer a Donut of the Day or Week.
Coffee selections include a nitrous coffee and cold-brewed coffee, both on tap. “The nitrous coffee is almost like a Guinness [stout]—it comes out thick and rich,” says Matt. Additionally, the shop will offer cappuccinos and mocha coffee drinks, with a “sommelier of coffee” on hand to manage the coffee menu.
The menu features breakfast sandwiches (including the signature Daylight sausage roll and a glazed donut sandwich with sausage, egg, and cheese) and six varieties of artisan sandwiches. Favorites include the Downtown Turkey with brie and cranberry sauce on a Cuban roll, and the Burning River Beef with Middlefield pepper jack cheese, spicy pepper relish, and garlic mayo on asiago focaccia—as well as the Eastside Corned Beef, Murray Hill Prosciutto, and a root vegetable wrap.
A soft-serve ice cream machine will allow the Giles to serve up all sorts of donut-and-ice cream desserts, as well as regular and coffee espresso milkshakes.
Furthermore, Daylight Donuts has teamed up with CLE Urban Winery to make Donuts for Grownups—donuts holes infused with fruit-infused wine. The holes are available at the winery every Friday and Saturday for $1.50 each, or aficionados can pay $8 for six and $15 for a dozen. The winery started selling them last Friday, January 19, to a warm reception. “Everybody was raving about them,” says Matt.
Daylight Donuts and Coffee will be open seven days a week, both sit-down and drive-thru, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Motorcars Collision customers will also, of course, be treated to coffee and donuts while they wait for their cars.
