University Circle Inc.'s recent annual meeting highlighted examples of successful innovation within the district, from Piccadilly Artisan Creamery's liquid nitrogen-fueled ice cream to healthcare startups spinning out of BioEnterprise.
One of the innovators who was highlighted in UCI President Chris Ronayne's speech was Chris Wentz, a CWRU grad and founder of Everykey, who is launching his startup out of what Ronayne dubbed a "nouveau garage" -- that is, a cool apartment in the Uptown development.
Keynote speaker Bruce Katz of the Brookings Foundation stated University Circle may be one of the world's first innovation districts. "This city, this Circle was innovative before innovation was cool," he said, citing the fact that the district is well-positioned to continue as an innovation breeding ground thanks to at least two factors: the geography of innovation is shifting back to cities, and anchor institutions are often leading it.
