In a world where it is difficult to proclaim that anything is entirely unique, there was Sun Ra.
A composer, poet and godfather of experimental jazz whose immeasurable creativity was undoubtedly otherworldly. Perhaps his cosmic creativity was fueled by the belief that he was actually from Saturn.

His band The Sun Ra Arkestra ensemble began in the ‘50s and toured with a wide array of musical line-ups. When Sun Ra passed away (from the earthly dimension) in the early ‘90s, his band carried his legacy.

“Marshall Allen leads the band now and he always puts together an outstanding lineup -- they’re going to come fully outfitted and ready to blow people’s minds,” says Mike Miller, vice president of Music Box Supper Club. “To me this is big band jazz boogie woogie with a touch of blues to it -- there’s dancing, singing, chanting and a horn section -- it’s a huge band with 15 to 20 performers on stage.”

The band is currently directed by saxophonist and original member, maestro Marshall Allen. They have toured extensively worldwide, however it’s been numerous years since The Sun Ra Arkestra has made an appearance in Cleveland.

Before opening Music Box Supper Club a year ago, the venue’s president and program director, Colleen Miller actually booked the band multiple times at the Chicago nightclub, Biddy Mulligans. She is looking forward to re-introducing the band to a Cleveland audience of both new and old fans who are sure to have an unforgettable experience.

This Friday, pretend that spring isn’t a Cleveland winter away. The Cleveland Museum of Art will be bursting with flowers on canvas and in vases. A ticket includes admission to the Painting the Modern Garden: Monet to Matisse exhibition which features over 100 garden-inspired masterpieces by Monet, Van Gogh, Cezanne, and Matisse. Enjoy real-life floral arrangements by Cleveland artists that were inspired by works in the collection and will be on display during the event exclusively.

Take a trip to outer space at SPACES this Saturday! Celebrate the gallery’s annual benefit, art auction and costume party. Guide to the Galaxy will be celebrating the out-of-this-world projects presented at SPACES with cosmic cocktails and an exhibition featuring the work of 75 artists.

SPACES is also excited to honor longtime Cleveland curator, William Busta and his wife, Joan Tomkins, the retired former finance director for the Cleveland Public Library, who have promoted the careers of dozens of the region's best artists and supported SPACES through the light-years.

Chakaia Booker is an American artist that uses shredded NASCAR tires to create interesting textural sculptures. She recently visited CIA for a week-long residency, during which she met with students in their studios and installed her solo exhibition that showcases 12 pieces including sculptures and prints.
