They had nothing to lose — you can see it in their eyes. Before cutting their long hair, moving to New York City and becoming one of many raw and iconic bands to explode from CBGBs, the Dead Boys were just a team of restless Cleveland punks.

The Dead Boys singer,Stiv Bators is well known for his confrontational stage antics and signature snarl. During their punk anthem “Sonic Reducer” Bators would tangle himself in his microphone chord and thrash around the stage in a frenzied love-hate relationship with the audience as he’d howl, “I don't need anyone. / Don’t need no mom and dad. / Don't need no pretty face. / Don’t need no human race.”

The exhibition explores a different, more personal and vulnerable side of Bators, shot in the summer of ‘76 in a Lakewood apartment, a year before punk exploded, when The Dead Boys were unknowingly teetering on the edge of making history.

“There is a comfort level to the photos — you get to see the interiors from the beaded curtains to the garbage. There are a lot of cool little hints of what their lives were like,” said art historian and exhibit co-curator, Brittany Hudak.

For nearly four decades, Dave Treat, Stiv’s neighbor and close friend, kept the earliest photos of the Dead Boys in a closet before they were brought to the attention of Hudak and photographer and Gallery One Sixty owner, Bryon Miller, who co-curated the show. Many of the photographs have gone unseen — even by the members of the band -- until now. Miller cleaned the negatives and printed them in Gallery One Sixty’s darkroom.

“We decided to forgo digital printing for this project. I like how fuzzy and dirty and how many slight mistakes there are. We chose to print them old school to capture that feeling,” says Hudak.

Treat took the photographs over the course of several days for an assignment as a student at Cleveland’s now-defunct Cooper School of Art. The show also includes the first promotional photos of the band, that went unused because they didn’t include the bassist, Jeff Magnum.

The photographs capture the band during a time of evolution. Before moving to NYC and rechristening themselves the Dead Boys, the band called themselves Frankenstein, a short-lived long-haired glam punk band.

“It’s an interesting juxtaposition, seeing these photos before Stiv moved to NYC and got a record deal. The images have the intimacy of friends just hanging out in an apartment together. Dave told me that this is how he remembers Stiv,” Miller says.

While bands like Peru Ubu and Devo where blowing up the Cleveland scene, The Dead Boys didn’t quite fit into the region’s art-punk scene. Although the band had never been to NYC before the move, they quickly made a snotty punk rock home for themselves at CBGBs.

“I think that a lot of people forget that Dead Boys were a Cleveland band,” says Miller. “For the younger people coming to the show, it’ll be a glimpse at something that they’ll never see. Some people that come to the show might have seen The Dead Boys and they can reminisce.”

The show is timed with the 25th anniversary of Bators' untimely death in Paris. Limited Edition hardcover STIV:1976 Exhibition Catalogues will be available at the opening. The exhibit runs through Sunday, July 26th.
