University Circle is one of the most concentrated square miles of arts and cultural organizations in the country. For a long time, Circle leaders have hoped to host a walking tour to share its unique history, architecture and new development. This summer, they’re excited to present a series of three free walking tours held the third Saturday of the month, through September. 

Did you know that the Cleveland Zoo was located in Wade Park until 1907, where the Cleveland Botanical Gardens stands today, before the city laid out plans for the Cleveland Museum of Art? Or that the Western Reserve Historical Society was located downtown on Public Square before joining the Circle in 1898? How about that the Cleveland Institute of Art was initially founded in 1882 as Western Reserve School of Design for Women before becoming coeducational in 1892?

“I think University Circle is one of the most interesting neighborhoods in Cleveland as far as history and current development. If you’re curious about where Cleveland is headed, University Circle is helping to lead the way and you can experience what the Circle has to offer in a new way through the walking tour,” says David Razum, communications manager for University Circle.

Whether you’re a history buff, curious about the future development of Cleveland or you’re looking to discover new ways to enjoy the city, Circle Trek Tours aims to create a diverse, enriching experience. “We try to strike a balance between past, present and future. We touch on the early history of University Circle, current institutions and exhibits and future development and retail,” says Razum.

The tours will feature 16 stops in an hour and a half covering a two mile radius. The story begins with the founding of the Circle more than two hundred years ago, when it was known as Doan’s Corners, after Nathanial Doan, a member of the Connecticut Land Company, who established a tavern and made University Circle his home.

It will also cover the neighborhood’s diverse architecture, including Case’s Weatherhead School of Management designed by Frank Gehry. The tour will also visit Uptown and showcase new places to eat, shop and drink.

University Circle held a trial tour on the June 20^th  with 26 participants. If interest in guided tours grows in demand, they hope to continue the series past the summer. Guest are encouraged to register online.

CreativeMornings Cleveland welcomes monster making duo Chris Ryniak & Amanda Louise Spayd of designer toys, MadKnits to the breakfast podium this July to discuss the global theme: COLLABORATE. This month, Creative Mornings will be hosted in the Cleveland offices of Rosetta, an international marketing and advertising consulting agency.

Chris and Amanda work together and individually to create handmade and factory-produced toy figurines in resin, vinyl, and Japanese sofubi. For this month’s talk they’ll be sharing examples and experience from a few long-term collaborative projects, with an emphasis on utter panic, creative procrastination, massive deadline headaches, and how to refrain from killing your partner.

Celebrate the second annual VeloSano “Bike to Cure” ride to raise money for cancer research at Cleveland Clinic. More than 2,500 participants are expected to attend the annual cycling event downtown. The event begins with a kickoff party on Friday with live entertainment, food and beverages. Beginning Saturday, hundreds of cyclists will take off from Mall B to ride everything from a 12-mile fun ride to more than 200 miles.

Last year’s inaugural event raised more than $1.9 million dollars, bringing in donations from all 50 US states and 23 different countries. Every dollar raised by participants directly benefits cancer research at Cleveland Clinic. View the bike route and register here.

Local Architects Host Community Beach Day

Join members of The American Institute of Architects local chapter in their annual sandcastle competition at Edgewater Beach. There will be three truckloads of special building sand and two pumps that will bring lake water to the competitors. There will also be a refereed volleyball tournament featuring round-robin play, followed by a single elimination knockout round. There will be cash prizes awarded to top Sand Castle and Co-ed volleyball teams.

Discover your inner surrealist. This Saturday, Cleveland Print Room will present Exquisite Corpse, a silent auction fundraiser featuring works created by nationally recognized artists from Cleveland. The event will also include a live drawing event in the spirit of the Surrealist game, “Exquisite Corpse,” a parlor game originally invented by the Surrealists that connects together unrelated thoughts. Each artist will collaborate on the drawing without seeing each others’ contributions.

Visit Edgewater Park Sunday for a special sunset Yin yoga class on the beach.Yin yoga is more slow-paced and focuses on holding poses for extended periods of time. Bring a large blanket, mat, towel, water and sunscreen. A long relaxation will complete this special sunset session. If you can’t make it, join for a morning next Sunday from 10 until 11 am.
