Give the summer one last sweet goodbye kiss. On the first Friday of each month, Waterloo Road throws a party and this month, they will be closing Waterloo Rd between E 156^th and E 157^th Street for a neighborhood block party.

“It’s a traditional Cleveland block party,” says Amy Calahan of Waterloo Arts. “I have wanted to have an end of summer sort of last hurrah for families for a long time. We really want Waterloo to be an all age district.”

Kids and adults are encouraged to bring wheels —bike, skateboard and rollerblade to the party. Enjoy live music, Parade the Circle Puppets, ice cream, local food vendors, and community art projects with Praxis Fiber Workshop in addition to tons of new art openings at the galleries that line Waterloo Road.

This September kicks off "A Heavy, Humid World" works by Jake Kelly presented by Gallery One Sixty. Kelly is a prolific illustrator that you might recognize by thousands of B&W gig posters he has created for the Grog Shop and Beachland Ballroom and large scale murals in Melt Bar and Grilled. He also wrote the stories in the Lake Erie Monster comic series that he co-created with friend and fellow illustrator, John G. His dizzying rock and roll aesthetic captures Cleveland in a way that nobody else can and this is his first solo show in 10 years.

Make sure not to pass up "Urban Avian Factory" from 5-8 pm at Waterloo Arts. “Artist Dana Depew created this thing called the Urban Aviary — he’s known for making birdhouse out of repurposed materials. He’ll be making them with people and giving them away,” says Callahan.

Depew will be fabricating, documenting and distributing handmade birdhouses to the public who are encouraged to post their birdhouses on social media. The project runs in partnership with Waterloo Arts evolving exhibition on bottled water which explores the human relationship with the natural world.

Guide to Kulchur has recently expanded to new digs. The independent book store and small press left its old home on W. 65th to expand to a larger storefront in Gordon Square as part of its initiative to create 20 jobs over the course of 18 months. The new store includes a diverse selection of reading material including new releases, classics and over 50 new additions to their zine collection.

The celebration will include a delicious spread of small bites, store tour, a series of readings by poets and writers and end with a dance party by DJs aLIVE + River Chino + Francois Fissi Bissi Okrakongo. The reading begins at 8 pm with readings from eight writers and Guide to Kulchur co-founder RA Washington from his new book of selected poems Night In A{fair} Republic.

MIX at CMA: Vision

Grab a drink and enjoy CMA’s gorgeous south terrace. September’s MIX features dance the lightning-fast rhythms of Nigérien rock stars Tal National featuring musical stylings from the diverse ethnic populations of Nigeria. Explore the galleries and attend a curator talk with Beau Rutland at 7:30 pm.
