The relationship is reciprocal: Innovation sparks change. And change spurs innovation. As Cleveland continues to change and evolve, IngenuityFest does too.

The year’s theme is “Transitions” and the festival takes place at Voinovich Park in North Coast Harbor and along the waterfront including the Great Lakes Science Center and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. It aims to bridge together creativity, innovation, art and technology through the creation of many unique pop-up environments in the traditional open outdoor space.

“Ingenuity is going through a lot of internal and external change and we have developed a new identity,” says program director Emily Appelbaum. “Cleveland is changing a lot too. Transitions refers to our new outlook and also Cleveland’s evolving identity.”

When IngenuityFest was founded by James Levin 11 years ago, one of the festival’s main focuses was to creatively utilize underutilized parts of the city. In years past, festival attendees experienced the thrill of exploring the delightfully industrial lower level of the Detroit Superior Bridge and Docks 30 and 32. Recently, as many of the city’s underutilized spaces have begun to fill, the festival’s mission has evolved.

This year, the festival aims focuses on filling an abstract void — the untapped opportunities in the creative landscape —by serving as a catalyst to connect individuals with small businesses and partners. Ingenuity is also celebrating its transition into a nonprofit company with year-round programming.

“Ingenuity wants to keep mission fresh and relevant and make sure that we aren’t just a fun place to go and hang out. We are also a tool to do work — we hope to focus on connecting resources both educational and cultural and put them to use in new ways,” says Appelbaum.

The festival includes a lineup of live music, vendors, site-specific installations and the ART-chi-TECH-ton galleries which includes Orange River (Road to Nowhere) — a two channel video installation by Jacob Koesler housed in a shipping container. It also features fire pits designed by Stephen Manka and Brad Civic and Tesla Orchestra, a performance group that uses tesla coils, is back with a new piece called will “Big Tippy.”

Featured artists also include Toronto-based artist Marian Wihak and sculptures by Leila Khoury and Robert Winkler who will be leaving behind a permanent piece of artwork donated to Great Lakes Science Center. A piece titled Pipe Dream by by Guerin Wolf and Tom Franco will also be installed permanently after the festival.

Attendees can expect to experience a festival that, just like the city, is experiencing an overflow of new energy informed by it’s past. “In all the hubbub of transition and new faces, the festival is also the result of many old faces including production director Chuck Karnak, executive director Paula Grooms and operations director Bill Kvoriak,” says Appelbaum. “This year is a product of new energy complimenting familiar faces.”
