The World on Stage: Summer concert series will celebrate cultures in the Cultural Gardens


Regional world music will ring from the Cleveland Cultural Gardens this summer when The World on Stage concert and event series begins on Saturday, July 1 at Centennial Peace Plaza, 1051 Martin Luther King Blvd., and runs through early September.

World on Stage with celebrate African, the Middle Eastern, Brazilian, and Asian cultures. Additional events this summer will also celebrate the diversity of both Cleveland and the world with Community Night, an International Music Competition, and the annual One World Day.

The events will feature music, dance, fashion shows, youth groups, cooking demonstrations, and other traditional expressions of culture.

The World on Stage schedule is:

Saturday, July 1: Africa Day, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
A celebration of African culture, featuring African Drumming and Spoken Work by 99 Treasures Art & Culture, Akron-based African dance troupe The Black Beanz; an Ethiopian coffee ceremony; and the Djapo Cultural Arts Institute presenting music and drumming from Mali, Senegal, the Ivory Coast, and Guinea

Saturday, July 22: Middle East Day, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
A celebration of Middle Eastern culture, featuring music and performers and more from Mehmet Gencer and Friends, Tony Mikhael and Band, and others.

Saturday, Aug. 5: Community Night in the Gardens, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The Cleveland Cultural Gardens and the Famicos Foundation in Glenville will cohost an evening of blues and jazz music, with neighborhood artists playing a prominent role on stage

Saturday, Aug. 12: Hispanic Cultural Day, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
A celebration of Brazilian music, featuring the Moises Borges Band and Samba dancing from Samba da Cidade and Oye Dance Company.

Saturday, Aug. 19: International Music Competition, 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Winners from the Stars of Summer International Competition will perform American composer Alexander Peskanov’s Ukrainian Concerto #2. Other performances include the Cleveland Ballet, opera singers, and other vocal and piano performances.

One World DayOne World DaySunday, Aug. 27: One World Day, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The 77th Annual One World Day celebrates diverse cultural and ethnic groups through the Cleveland Cultural Gardens’ shared motto: peace through mutual understanding. This free event, hosted by the Cleveland Cultural Gardens Federation since 1946, is filled with opportunities for individuals and families to learn about the many cultures that call Northeast Ohio home.

Saturday, Sep. 9: Asian Cultural Day, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
An afternoon of dancing and music covering Northeast and Southeast Asia. Acts Pacific Paradise Entertainment & Halau Ka Pua Mae’ole Kuikanani, Stellar Acrobatic Dance Academy, Cleveland Contemporary Chinese Culture Association, Sho-Jo-Ji Japanese Dancers, The New Cleveland Indians, and Kwan Family Lion Dance Team.
