Earth Day, Coventry-style
Today's a great day to celebrate the many businesses that support sustainability in Coventry Village, and the neighborhood will do just that from 12 to 3 p.m. Stop by Mac's Backs-Books on Coventry for 20 percent off nature- and environment-themed books, make your mark on the mural in front of the old Big Fun space, and stop by the reusable bag giveaway and pop-up plant sale.

Spring cleaning
Join Doan Brook Watershed Partnership at two Earth Day-themed volunteer cleanup events this weekend, aimed at helping improve water quality while also giving back to our urban parks, streams, and waterways.

The Doan Brook/Rockefeller Park Cleanup is being held April 27 by the Rockefeller Park gazebo (near intersection of MLK and E. 105th), while the Doan Brook gorge/Shaker Lakes Cleanup happens April 28 by the intersection of E. 127th St. and Fairhill. Both events run from 1 to 3 p.m., but volunteers may arrive as early as 12:30 PM to sign in and grab gloves, trash bags, and snacks/refreshments. Warm clothing and waterproof boots are recommended. Crooked river conversations
As part of the ongoing Xtinguish celebration, a series of "Crooked River Conversations" will explore the Cuyahoga River through the lens of food, recreation, science, and fine arts. This Tuesday, April 23, "Crooked River Conversations: River Fires and Fire Boats" will go back in time to examine 15 major fires along the Cuyahoga River and "the battles to extinguish misconceptions about the river." The event will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. at Kelvin Smith Library (11055 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland) in the first-floor gallery.

Ready for its closeup
Xtinguish is hosting its own 48-Hour Film Project, but with a twist—all short films must somehow feature the Cuyahoga River. Join other local filmmakers in shooting, editing, and producing a film in just 48 hours starting this Friday, April 26, at 5 p.m. Films will premiere at MOCA on May 31. For more 411, click here.

Putting the "tree" in "treat"
Celebrate Arbor Day with Mitchell’s Ice Cream and Western Reserve Land Conservancy on Friday, April 26. Adopt a tree seedling (while supplies last) and indulge in one of Mitchell’s tree-inspired ice cream treats at the Ohio City and University Circle locations from 12 to 9 p.m. For more info, click here.

It takes a village
Slavic Village's tree canopy is growing, thanks to the efforts of Reforesting Slavic Village, and the neighborhood will celebrate with an Arbor Day Block Party. On Saturday, April 27, join Western Reserve Land Conservancy and the Cleveland Tree Coalition for a tree planting at Fullerton School (3900 E. 75th St., Cleveland) from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mayor Frank Jackson will be in attendance, and free trees will be distributed to residents of Slavic Village through the Cleveland Community Canopy Program. From zero to hero
The ZeroWaste NEO working group is hosting two upcoming free workshops to share best practices for hosting zero and reduced-waste events (both large and small). The first will be held on Wednesday, May 1, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste district (4750 E. 131st St., Garfield Heights). The second workshop will take place on Tuesday, May 14, at the Eastern Campus of Cuyahoga Community College from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Click here to register.
