For two years, a bright, bold Camille Walala-designed mural has been signaling to Clevelanders that something cool and creative would be moving into the former KeyBank building on Waterloo Road.
Now Jack Mueller is finally ready to boost that signal as he prepares to officially open Pop Life, a design-forward yoga studio that will also feature an on-site juicery and retail shop with curated art, housewares, and apparel. “We see Pop Life as a lifestyle,” says Mueller. “The whole brand and the whole space is meant to be an experience.”
According to Mueller, Pop Life will offer a wide range of yoga styles—including vinyasa, yin, restorative, Kundalini, color therapy, power, and hot yoga. Mindfulness and meditation classes will round out the schedule. Mueller plans to offer one free community yoga class each month, along with half-off packages for residents of the immediate surrounding neighborhood.
“A lot of people view wellness as a luxury, but we want it to be for everyone,” says Mueller. “That’s a big part of our mission."
Mueller has known he wanted to set up shop in Collinwood ever since 2014, when Waterloo Arts spearheaded the large-scale Zoetic Walls public art project. When Mueller later purchased the long-vacated KeyBank building, he commissioned London-based artist Camille Walala to cover the exterior with a custom mural in her signature Memphis Revival style.
“Street art is such a big inspiration for me,” says Mueller. “When Waterloo Arts did their mural program, I started looking at real estate opportunities in the area because it was in alignment with what I wanted to bring to Cleveland.”
Mueller, who goes by the spiritual name "Jodha Nam," was born in New York City, raised in Cleveland, and spent eight years on the West Coast, where he opened an art gallery and design shop in Berkeley called Spacepop. Mueller is also a certified kundalini yoga instructor, and he owns Felice Urban Cafe in Cleveland's Larchmere neighborhood with his husband, Paul Neundorfer.
Pop Life will officially open on Nov. 1 during the Walk All Over Waterloo event, but the studio will be offering a sneak peek this Friday, Oct. 11, at a soft-opening event featuring aura photography, tarot and astrology readings, sound bath meditations, yoga sessions, complimentary vegan snacks from Ritual Juicery, and more, along with tours of the building.
For Mueller, it all comes back to finding the sweet spot at the intersection of collaboration, creativity, and wellness—along with a healthy dose of what Mueller calls "high-vibe design."
"Our tagline is, 'The Art of Wellness,'" explains Mueller. "For me, art can be very healing and help us access higher states of consciousness."
